John Coyle was instrumental in developing downtown San Dimas into an important commercial center during the early 20th century with his vision for an all-encompassing shopping district known today as Central Plaza Mall which Front Street crossed to form Pioneer Road serving primarily local businesses before being truncated off at First Street by Ivar Munch's addition to Hearst Corporation's campus expansion plans for Claremont Colleges (now UCLA). One major benefactor of Coyle's redevelopment efforts were several new movie theaters built along Pioneer Road between 1920 and 1925 including Regal Cinemas (1925), Normandie (1926), Mirischtheater (1927) and Egyptian Theatre (1928). Other notable landmarks associated with this period include RKO Radio Pictures' studio complex on Western Avenue near Seventh Street which housed sound stages for films like King Kong ( 1933), A Place in Time ( 1945) and Drums Along Canada Creek ( 1949). In 1906, San Dimas became part of the United States after it was acquired by Los Angeles County.
