In addition to its rich cultural heritage, San Dimas also boasts some of the best schools in Southern California - making it an attractive place to live and work.
The San Dimas area was first inhabited by the Tongva people. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Pedro Fages and his party, who explored the coast of California in 1769. In 1824, the Mexican government granted a Rancho San Dimas to José Bautista Alvarado, who named it after himself. In 1851, Don Miguel de Cervecera bought the Rancho San Dimas from José Bautista Alvarado. Cervecera began developing the land into a cattle ranch and later became an agriculturalist with mills and plantations near his ranch. He is buried at Mission Dolores Cemetery in San Dimas.
