San Dimas, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 102,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community of San Dimas first developed as a small ranching town on what is now the eastern edge of present-day Riverside County. A post office was established in 1887 and growing citrus production lured settlers to the area. The name "San Dimas" originated with a Japanese American named Yoshio Matsushima who arrived in America in 1912 and found work near Crystal City on then-Pine Barrens land east of Los Angeles. He christened his new community after his home province, Japan, which he had seen during his travels there before coming to America. In 1932, local businessman James Hickey purchased 8 acres (3 ha) east of downtown San Bernardino for $25,000 and began developing it into an agricultural center known as Hickey's Valley Agricultural District. The area rapidly became one of Southern California's most important crops producer with almonds being the dominant crop until almond prices went down during World War II. In 1947, Hickey sold his holdings to developer Harry Chandler and incorporated the village of Crescent City into San Dimas while still retaining control over Hickey's Valley Agricultural District.
