The first Europeans to arrive in San Dimas were the Franciscans. They arrived in 1769 and founded a mission, San Francisco de Asís, which was dedicated on October 27 of that year. The mission was abandoned in 1821 after making little progress. In 1824, a group of Mormon missionaries came to California and started a small farm near what is now Los Angeles Boulevard. Because of this, the area became known as Mormon Row. In 1886, San Dimas incorporated as a city and renamed it for José Gabriel García Márquez, author of One Hundred Years of Solitude.
