These changes are documented particularly through aerial photo evidence taken during World War II when air raids ravaged downtown neighborhoods such as La Jolla/Poway Hills; Naval Air Station El Centro; Gaslamp Quarter; Downtown Tijuana; University City;" Escondido"};In terms of demographics: In 1940 there were over 100 families residing in downtown San Diego compared to only 30 families residing in Midway Center In 1970 there were over 1 million people living within commuting distance within the cities limits
In 1821, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Diego to Carlos Vásquez. The grant covered an area of 243 square miles, including present-day San Diego and some adjacent small towns. The Spanish had founded Mission San Diego de Alcalá in 1769, and Mission Santa Ana on the southern tip of Point Loma in 1784. In 1821, Mexico withdrew from the United States and ceded all of California to America. The new nation decided that land east of the Rocky Mountains would be given to Asians, so Rancho San Diego was acquired by Captain José Borrego in 1826. In 1835, Captain John Brougham surveyed what is now downtown San Diego and named it after himself, Borrego's home town in England. At first, most people thought Brougham was honoring his late friend and mentor Commodore John Stockton who had served as captain of American forces at Buena Vista Peninsula during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). However, later investigations revealed that Brougham may have been honoring another Englishman who had fought for Mexico against America - General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna - commander of Mexican forces at Vera Cruz during that conflict.
