In 1852, Alvarado Rancho Adobe became part of Rancho La Mesa y Otay National Wildlife Refuge when it was donated by Agustín Castro to the United States government as part of a swap between Mexico and America resulting in independence from Spain
The first European to set foot on San Diego was Gaspar de Portolá, who landed there in 1542. The area that is now San Diego was part of the Juan Rodríguez expedition, which sailed from Mexico City in 1542 looking for a new route to Asia. On July 26, 1546, they arrived at the site of present-day San Diego and named it "Los Angeles" after King Philip II of Spain. In 1769, Don Francisco García de Quesada y Pastor granted Rancho del Presidio to Manuel Nieto, an American settler. In 1821, Mexican citizens purchased additional land near the Presidio from José María Escobar. On November 16 of that year, Mexican President Agustín de Iturbide declared California a state and appointed José Castro as its first governor. On December 14th 1844, General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded La Jolla on what is now Point Loma near present-day downtown San Diego. Santa Anna's fortification system included a number of artillery batteries that were used to harass American sailors during the Battle of Stockton Harbor in 1847. That event helped spur development around Point Loma and led to increased immigration to California by Anglo-Americans during the 1850s and 1860s. In 1906–1907 construction began on Mission Bay Naval Shipyard adjacent to present day Discovery Park in DowntownSanDiego; this project resulted in major expansion for the cityscape around Mission Bay as well as new neighborhoods such as North Beach and South Beach. The shipyard closed in 1957 but left an impact on downtownSanDiego through its legacy of architecture and engineering including: USS Constitution Museum (1865), State Capitol Building (1901), Merrimac Bridge (1922), Alameda Naval Air Station (1943).
