From its inception until 1821,San Diego’s role within Alta California varied but included both missionary work (particularly among the Lipan Indians) and military garrisoning duties (usually against Native American groups). In 1821–22 Mexican Bandit leader Juan Bautista Mora attacked several parties traveling through Alta California and killed six men including Commander Manuel Nieto at Rancho del Rinconada near modern day Kearny Mesa. This event led to increased security around Missions throughout Alta California; which in turn contributed to increasing visitation by Anglo settlers during this period. Protestant missionaries soon followed Mora into La Paz Valley where they established missions such as Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (1824), Nuestra Señora del Carmen (1828), Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación (1831), and Don José Cámpora’s Convento de la Purísima Trinidad Parish Church in 1835. These Missions served an important spiritual purpose for Mexicans living in northern Mexico City while also providing opportunities for interaction between Spanish Catholics and Anglo Protestants. The first European to set foot in San Diego was Gaspar de Portolà on October 15, 1769. He named the area "San Diego" after his hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The first known resident of San Diego was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who landed on San Diego Bay on November 2, 1542. In 1666, Mission San Luis Rey was built in what is now downtown San Diego and it became the first Catholic mission in California. After years of construction and delay, theMission was finally completed by Father Junipero Serra on February 14, 1777. It served as a terminus for numerous missions throughout California including Alta California (1846-1849), Nuestra Señora Concepción (1858-1861), La Purísima Trinidad (1892-1901), and Callejon de la Frontera Spanishtown (1907-1908). In 1821, Don José Mirabal founded Rancho del Pacifico at what is now Harbor Village north of downtown San Diego. The Mirabal ranch extended from modern day Petco Park east to today's Old Town District. Rancho del Pacifico served as an important grazing ground for local Native American tribes and provided early settlers with food and shelter during their travels through central California during the period of adobe construction which began in 1852. On September 12th 1875 King Phillip II issued a proclamation granting Rancho Santa Fe Mexican Land Grant #6 survey to Francisco Estrada y Valdivia along County Line Road 6 southeast of modern day North Park Avenue in present dayold town district
