The first post office opened in 1856, but it did not take full advantage of new transportation facilities until 1865 when an electric streetcar line was built between Downtown and Escondido. In 1909, La Jolla became a separate town within San Diego County while downtown continued to be part of San Diego. Since then, La Jolla has gradually regained its role as a major metropolis within the city limits while continuing to serve as an important commuter town for southeastern residents who work in nearby Imperial Valley or North County communities such as Carlsbad or Vista Linda. Today’s downtown core is home to two large shopping malls - One anchored by Macy’s flagship store; and another containing Sears Holdings Corporation’s Kmart store – as well as several smaller businesses districts including Isla Vista Heights and University Town Center neighborhood which are adjacent to Navy Yard industrial park that houses Naval Weapons Station Point Loma National Security Site used for testing weapons such as cruise missiles etc..
