In 1836, entrepreneur Antonio Canoga built an adobe call center overlooking Carpinteria Harbor on top of one of his properties which became known as "Canoga's Hill." After hearing aboutamerican gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill (now Gold Rush) he decided to take a chance on an unprofitable venture and invested $5,000 in gold mining claims near present day Oceanside. With a workforce totaling only twenty men working five days per week during rush season (July-September), Canoga quickly realized that he could not make any money from his mine but rather use it merely as a stopover on his way from Sonoma County to Lodi where he sold goods created from mined gold until 1849 when production ended due to various factors including changing market conditions and competition from other mines around San Diego County). Canoga continued operating hismine until February 25th 1861 when Mexican forces under General José Joaquín Vasquez sacked his facility following their victory over American forces at Alta Mesa Creek Bridge during the Mexican–American War ending over two years of warfare throughout Southern California involving volunteer militia units under Lieutenant Colonel John Copley Ulysses S Grant (). A small community developed around Canoga's Mine due to its proximity to Highway 101 which led people visiting nearby beaches along Carpinteria Harbor back home again insteadof having to go far away like before. However, operations at Canoga's Mine stopped shortly thereafter because technological advances had made surfaceGoldmining much easier than ever before so early returns discouraged many potential investors from entering this new industry while also making large profits for those who did enter congrats primarily liquid Gold prices were high even during tough times though still higher then anything else being produced today thanks largely to easy access good transportation infrastructure etc... Today old buildings used as storage or office space are unfortunately all that remain standing downtown Carpinteria harbor including severalfactories former warehouses now called apartments etc... All told some lovelyold homes have been bulldozed within spitting distance of most people’s front yards including one right next doorto me just waiting for someone with creative ideas about using them...... The small, triangular island was then named by the Spanish for Saint Clement, the patron saint of Santiago de Compostela. In 1821, a group of American sailors led by Commodore John D. Sloat founded the town of San Clemente on the mainland side of San Clemente Island. In 1875, San Clemente became a city after being annexed by Los Angeles. The name "San Clemente" originated from its original use as a naval base and not from St. Clement's patron saint. On July 26, 1944, during World War II, Japanese forces surprise attacked USS Pascagoula (LPD-4) with torpedoes and bombs off the coast of California while shipwrecked survivors were using her for refuge. Damage done to Pascagoula caused her to be abandoned by United States Navy personnel near Point Conception about 120 miles south of Torrance on October 15th that year. In 1969, Mayor Herb Caen requested that City Council adopt Resolution No. 2147 which called for the erection of an appropriate Monument to commemorate Coast Guard members killed in action or who died while serving their country in any conflict or war anywhere in the world at any time since 1800 when America declared itself a republic under George Washington as our first president
