The name San Clemente comes from Mission San Clemente de las Islas del Norte, which was founded in 1776 by Franciscan missionaries. The mission was destroyed by the Mexican War (1846-48), but its ruins still remain today. The name then passed to Mission San Miguel Arcángel, built in 1821 near what is now downtown Salinas. That mission was also destroyed by Mexico during the war; however, its remains are still standing today. In 1875, Californian Senator John Wickersham petitioned Congress for a new district to be carved out of Alta California because he thought that much of what lay within present-day Salinas and Monterey Counties should become part of that territory because they were under Spanish jurisdiction at that time. On July 10, 1875, Congressional Resolution 910 created San Francisco County as part of Alta California; this area included most of what is now Salinas County except for portions east and west of missions Bay Bridge and Point Reyes National Seashore respectively. On December 1st 1870 – one month after statehood – James Phelan organized a group called “The Pioneers” to purchase land east of the Tehachapi Mountains from Juan Bautista Lomas for $2 an acre and build a town on the site known as North Springville or North Of Market Place (later renamed Old Town). On January 6th 1871 Phelan submitted plans for North Springville to Captain George Seaton who became Executive Officer under Mayor Samuel Atherton with responsibility for all municipal affairs including housing and public works etcetera until such time as City Hall could be built there at an estimated cost not exceeding $5,000 per structure plus interest on said amount up to date at various rates existing at that time….the first meeting held under Council Identification No..Civic Center began on February 3rd 1861 when thirty five citizens met […] discuss matters connected with their organization [of] South Union Street Company which would soon become First National Bank

The history of San Clemente, California goes back to 1821 when it was part of the Rancho San Carlos. In 1848, the United States acquired the Rancho Los Alamitos which included much of what is now San Clemente. The first land grant in this area was made to José Joaquín Crespí and José Antonio Reyes on December 6, 1849. The original town site was a small cluster of adobe buildings on Point Reyes Road near the present-day intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Interstate 5. In 1874, Don Miguel Enriquez established a mission at Mission Santa Clara de la Concepción after founding Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This rancho became known as El Camino Real de California (The Road from Cali to Sacramento). In 1901, San Clemente incorporated as an unincorporated community with a population of about 100 people. It grew rapidly during World War I because of military production and defense needs for Catalina Island. A post office opened at San Clemente on July 14, 1916, and remained in operation until it closed on February 11, 1971. The last resident to leave their home was Mrs. Alice Scherrer on September 9th 1961. During World War II many businesses were set up within the town limits such as war munitions plants at Point Lobos and Orlac Naval Air Station; also meatpacking plants at Foothills Farms and Tomales Bay Naval Air Station; shipyards along coastlines near Islip and Farmingdale; shoe factories at Pescadero Hills; printing shops including the first newspaper in California published by Hearst Corporation in 1940; various types of stores including hardware stores, clothing stores etc.; some residences were built for officers or other high-ranking officials living aboard naval vessels moored off shore while others were used as barracks for soldiers or airmen stationed ashore during those years A Power house was completed by Edison Electric Company shortly before World War II ended providing power for local businesses . A large concrete “tower” overlooking Point Lobos harbor became known as "Edison Tower" after General Electric's vice president Walter Edison who financed its construction
Spanish colonists founded San Clemente in 1795, and named it for Saint Clement of Rome. The Mission Santa Clara was founded in 1796 by Father Junípero Serra, and named for the first sister of Jesus. The mission was abandoned in 1813 and converted to a convent. In 1821, the mission was re-founded as a parish by Bishop José Gomez, with the name of San Pablo de la Frontera. The parish continued to be called San Pablo until 1950 when it became part of the newly created Angeles Metropolitan Area.
