firearms have been a part of San Clemente, California's history for over three centuries. The first known firearm to be used in the area was a simple muzzleloader, which was used by local Native Americans. In 1826, local resident José Alvarenga acquired a shotgun from Manuel Nieto in Mexico City and began using it to hunt deer on the Rancho San Clemente boundary. The rifle quickly gained popularity and was soon being used by law enforcement as well as civilians. In 1845, Alvarenga passed his shotgun down to his son Santiago who continued to use it for target shooting at the ranch until 1865 when he sold it to Pascual Garrido. In 1865, Garrido married Maria de la Cruz and started storing handguns at his home in order to protect himself from gangs that were terrorizing the city of San Francisco. The next year saw the purchase of a .50 caliber pistol by Captain Lorenzo Foote from Nicholas Meehan of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Foote became interested in targets and started shooting at night while living inSan Clemente. He eventually decided that he wanted one himself and bought one of these pistols on November 10th, 1875 from Garrido for $200 dollars cash only! It is interesting to note that this pistol is still being held today by the same person - Captain Lorenzo Foote - who purchased it more than 100 years ago! In 1907, two brothers named William Hargrave and Harry Hargrave purchased land southeast of downtown San Clemente and commenced building what would become known as "Hargrave & Company". This manufacturing company manufactured rifles, shotguns and pistols under license from various arms manufacturers including Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), Browning Arsenal Corporation (Browning), Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company (Colt), Remington Arms Corporation (Remington) among others. By 1912 their handguns had also become available commercially under various brand names such as Smith & Wesson Model 6 revolver series; Taurus Pistol; Beretta Pistol; Colt 1911 Pistol; Ruger American Rifle Series revolvers; Gold Medal Revolver Sporting Goods Co.; Walther PPK Pistol/.380ACP; Kel-Tec P3P Pistol 9mm Luger/9mm Parabellum Caliber with safety catch system--all chambered in 5 rounds per magazine with no BBs Included--and many more! During World War II much of what we now call ammunition was actually made right here at "Hargrave & Company" during munitions production times! munitions workers who lived here also produced military hardware like machinegunsights, grenades launchers etc... all made here with precision using high quality materials sourced domestically including lead alloys found near our ammo plant sites! Ammunition production stopped after 1945 but some remnants still remain today like our iconic "Hargrive Torpedo Boat Launcher", also formerly manufactured at our Ammo Plant site back then!

The town of San Clemente, California was founded in 1836 by Mormon pioneers. The name has been changed a few times over the years, but the original settlers called it Spanish Town. The town is located on an artificial hill that is named after Saint Clement of Rome, who died in 753 AD. Today, San Clemente is a small community with a population of around 10,000 people. It is home to two universities-San Diego State University and Cal State Fullerton-and many businesses and restaurants. The first people to live in what is now San Clemente were Native Americans who had come from the area that includes today's Sacramento County and western Los Angeles County. Over time, the European settlers began to arrive in numbers and start building up what would become San Clemente. One of the first buildings built in this area was a mission school which served as a base for missionaries working among the native peoples. In 1836, Governor Manuel Micheltorena established the Mission Santa Clara de Asís on an artificial hillock near present-day San Clemente as part of his campaign to push settlers westward into new land grants. This village grew quickly thanks to its close proximity to other missions and traders living along the coast shipping goods through Point Reyes National Seashore at then known as Yuma Pass between Monterey Bay and inland Mission Bay. The mission’s rich mineral resources – including salt water doubloons (now called “doubled Doubles”) – soon attracted more colonists; by 1840 there were 400 residents living hereabouts under various Protestant denominations including Methodists, Baptists, Lutherans and Congregationalists seeking religious freedom from Spain following its Napoleonic occupation of Mexico City in 1821). During this same period several larger ships sailed into Point Reyes Harbour each carrying about 100 passengers: these were passage ships making their way southward round Cape Horn before reaching America’s busiest port where they unloaded their cargoes of provisions (including educational supplies) destined for Mexican residents living along California’s central coast (the “mission Indians”), among whom lived scores of Toltec/Tehuelche natives also shipwrecked off Point Reyes during California’s Soberanes winter season (1837–38)… By 1850 there must have been 1,500 or more citizens resident at Point Reyes… Of these Catholics only 350 remained after most joined forces with local Protestants during struggles ensuing from Mexican American War efforts against Anglo forces besieging Coalinga [Los Angeles] on May 28th 1861″ As missions closed down throughout North America due to lack of interest or persecution by state governments newly appointed by President James Polk relative to growing Mexican activity surroundingPoint Reyes NSA administrators decided upon splitting Missions Anahuac & Nuestra Senora de las Americas Alta [founded 1797], each reporting directly unto Bishop Romero Moraga at Sacramento Cathedral & District Office At Pico del Rey [at modern day Pacific Beach] El Capitan Tower [built 1888]. The population decreased after the war but has since grown again due to new development in nearby Marina del Rey and Hermosa Beach. They named it after Saint Clement of Rome, who is said to have preached Christianity in that region. In 1828, Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded nearby. The town grew rapidly and by 1849, it had a population of 3,000 people. It became an arm of the Mexican government and prospered as a commercial center. In 1869, the state of California acquired control over San Clemente and renamed it Angel Island.
