San Clemente, California was founded on November 12, 1821 by Commodore John F. Stockton and his wife Donna Maria de la Cruz. The small town of approximately 8,000 people was named for the Spanish mission San Felipe de Neve. The mission was built in 1795 on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. After only two years of operations, San Felipe de Neve was destroyed by a storm in 1814 and the town abandoned. The first permanent settler in San Clemente were two brothers from Kentucky, William and Andrew Irvine who arrived in 1824. They built aLog Cabin on Point Conception (now part of downtown), which still stands today as one of the city's earliest landmarks. In 1830, José Antonio Pico purchased land at Point Lobos for $3 per acre and began building what is now known as Pico House (later renamed "The Alta Vista"). He constructed five adobe buildings that survive to this day across three blocks east of Main Street between First and Second Streets. In 1834 he married Maria Chapa de la Rúa y Valdivia and they soon moved to live at Pico House. Between 1840-1849, numerous members of the related Mendiola clan settled in San Clemente after leaving their homes near Monterey Bay during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Many of these settlers came down with Generalísimo Ventura when he passed through California on his way to Los Angeles in December 1850. The early days of San Clemente were characterized by modest prosperity due to its location within easy reach of both portsuguese traders arriving from Brazil via sailing vessels called "Pilgrims" and entrepreneurs such as Nicholas Dirks who opened up new business ventures along Santa Clara Creek including brickmaking, wagonry, cattle ranching and wine production; Dirks also became president pro tempore (headquarters) for the Board of Supervisors beginning in 1852 until his death in 1860. Dirk Smeaton acquired land adjacent to present day Mission bayou shoreline near Point Conception around 1830s where he began developing it into what is now Smeaton Parkland housing developments; original streetscape remain today with viewports surrounding each development like those found at Missionary Ridge . One can walk or bike from any address within minutes without ever reaching DowntownSan Clemente/Mission Bay Area! In 1865 following passage of Proposition 66 which created statewide prohibition laws against alcohol consumption throughout California an initial group - mostly German immigrants - gathered at Sailor's Wharf located just southwest cornerof present day Naval Base Pier #4 opposite Bluff Street for storage purposes before moving inland towards present day City Hall plaza area under cover of darkness prior to entering underground parking garage beneath former Masonic Temple complex next door
San Clemente became a town in 1821 and was named for Saint Clement of Rome, who is venerated in the Catholic Church. The first post office at San Clemente was established in 1829. In 1856, the name of the town was changed to Huntington Beach after Samuel Huntington, whose heirs donated land for the new town. The beach at Huntington Beach was developed as a result of the construction of Golden Gate Park by Governor Prentice Markey in 1906.
