In 1932 a major fire destroyed much of the downtown area but did not damage any buildings within the limits of present-day San Clemente; this event has been called "the nightingale disaster". On February 2, 1933 two small fires started when a handbill dispenser operated accidentally at a movie theater near Center Street and Harbor Drive; these fires quickly grew out of control and caused extensive damage to both businesses and homes before being extinguished by firefighters with no loss reported among either structure or contents inside them. This event has also been referred to as "the penny dreadful fire". On July 21st 1935 two automobiles collided at I-5 just south of US 101 about 6 miles east ofceanside; both drivers were killed instantly as a result Of this collision which resulted in $100 million worth ($ today)in automotive repairs across America during that year alone . San Clemente was founded in 1782 by Spanish colonists as a small town on the eastern coast of California. The name "Clemente" is derived from the Latin word for "southern sun." In 1821, San Clemente became part of Mexico and was renamed Colima. It briefly regained its Mexican national identity in 1848 when it ratified the United States Constitution. In 1854, San Clemente seceded from Mexico and became an American state. It acquired its current name, given to it by Commodore Perry during his visit to California in 1856, after he sighted what he thought were two islands off the coast. The USS Perry anchored near San Clemente and discovered that both islands were actually three small islands - one called Isla de Santa Catalina (Island of Saint Kitts), another called Isla de Santa Cruz (Island of Santa Cruz), and still another called Isla del Rey (Island of the King). The only inhabitants of these tiny islets at that time were a few Coastal Miwok Indians who hunted seals and sea otters year-round and built some rudimentary structures out of dry logs. For many years there was no permanent human settlement on any or all of these islets due to their remote location, lack of water resources, dangerous surfacing rocks caused by winter storms, and fear that indigenous people would steal their goods or kill them if they found out about their presence. However, in 1906 a group of Englishmen landed on Isla de las Antillas (Island OF THE ANTILLES) while exploring seeking passage to Australia through Polynesia; this event initiated what would become known as "The Golden Age Of SAN CEMENTE" because so many wealthy Americans made landfall during this period seeking adventure and fortune amidst a growing population center throughout central California which supported shipbuilding yards manufacturing everything from warships to agricultural products such as fruits AND vegetables! Throughout most of this era residents maintained close ties with their homeland; even today church services are held twice each week at 3 p.m., local time on Easter Sunday based upon religious observances observed locally at that time! However, following World War II most San Clementeians chose self-reliance over dependence on foreign nations; however some did maintain strong ties with Mexico City through cultural exchanges despite political isolationism within America during that decade! Finally coming into its own as a major port town during the 1970's & 1980's following increased truck traffic & containerized shipping along roadsides adjacent to freeways leading inland;SAN CEMENTE has experienced explosive growth rates yet retains much vestigial old-world charm including unique architecture featuring elaborately carved sandstone cliffs topped by elaborate Mission Revival style churches embellished with diamond-shaped towers inspired by ancient Mexican pyramids?
