They built their homes on high ground overlooking ponds that served as watering holes for their herds of deer and other animals. In 1824, Rancho Santa Clara was granted to Francisco Palomares, Sr., a Spanish immigrant from Navarrese descent. Palomares named his rancho after Saint Christopher (another name for Santa Clara). He opened it up to homesteaders in 1827 and began farming rice, wheat, and other crops. In 1858, James Wickersham donated land to build a mission here which would become known as Mission San Carlos de los Padres (Missionspite). The original church was built in 1863 but it burned down in 1886. A new church was constructed on this site in 1912 and dedicated by Bishop Manuel Gomez y Salinas-Quintana. During World War II, San Carlos served as an airbase where Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes were stored until they could be delivered to Europe for combat use against Nazi Germany or Japan. After the war ended, many of these aircraft were scrapped here but a few remain on site today including one that can be seen driving around on State Route 95 near downtown San Carlos
