In 1821, the first permanent Europeans to arrive in San Carlos were José Vizcaino and his wife María. They founded a small mission on the present day site of Mission San Carlos, which they named Rancho San Carlos. The Vizcainos remained there for about forty years until their death in 1848. Their children, Vicente and Juana, took over the rancho when their father died. The first inhabitants of what is now San Carlos County were Native Americans, who lived along the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1776, during California's Mexican War, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna captured and killed many Indian people near modern-day Escondido. This event marked the beginning of white settlement in what is now San Carlos County. In 1821, José Vizcaino and his wife María arrived in this area from Mexico with several other families seeking land grants from Governor Manuel Nieto. After spending some time living among the Native Americans hereabouts, they brought back word that there was a rich gold mine located at Canoga Park (now Carpinteria). So they set out to exploration this Claims Field and found it to be false information! In fact, there was no gold mine but rather a number of small streams that supplied water to nearby settlements. The Vizcarionts returned home emptyhanded but decided to stay onshore until more definitive evidence could be obtained before moving inland again. Shortly thereafter they met Franciscan missionary Father Francisco Vallejo while he was on an exploratory mission through parts of central California including today’s Del Norte County east of Bakersfield; Vallejo had been sent by Bishop Pedro Funes y Arellano as part of religious orders' attempt to proselytize Indians along Spanish colonial lines among various groups living west of Bakersfield within ranchos controlled by Mexican authorities easternmost into California (including portions now belonging to Modoc County). Father Vallejo came ashore at present-day Mission Juanita on February 24th 1822 with twenty friars under his guidance soon after landing from sea aboard ship "Bahama". The party discovered large amounts of silver ore whereupon began working feverishly prospecting for it using adobe tools while also exploring potential sites for missions or churches within what would become known as Rancho Cáñamo del sur (near present-day Northridge).
