The town of San Carlos, California was founded by Spanish-Mexican settlers in the late 18th century. The area that is now San Carlos County was part of Alta California under Mexican rule and was not named after either San Carlos or Santa Clara. In 1836, during the Mexican–American War, American forces burned down the presidio at Mission Dolores and captured most of the surrounding Mexican villages. This event is known as the Missions burning. In 1846, when California became a United States territory, San Carlos became part of Juárez County. In 1850, it became part of Sacramento County. The post office at San Carlos opened on July 15, 1850. The first store in town was built by Silas Wright and John Clementson. By 1860, there were four stores in town with a population of about 150 people. On November 7, 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), General Irvin McDowell's army invaded and defeated Mexico's last remaining soldiery at Churubusco Creek near present day Diablo Park in what is now Yuba City; this action helped start the end of Mexico's colonial rule over much of North America from that point forward.
