San Carlos is a small, agricultural community in the Central Coast of California located on the San Andreas Fault. It is bordered by Redlands to the east, Carpinteria to the north, and Bakersfield to the west. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Carlos were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812 and rebuilt nearby. A post office was established here in 1853; it became a town in 1903. The town's growth stemmed from its proximity to two major oilfields: Porter Ranch and Lomita Oil Field. In 1911, an oil field was discovered here and production began soon after. The town prospered until World War II when wartime production ends and industry declines overall; however, some businesses do continue today such as supermarkets and jewelry stores that have been around since before petroleum exploration began hereabouts (in 1906). The area was sparsely populated and most of the original residents were Native Americans, who referred to the area as "Piton". In 1851, a group of Englishmen established a small community called Pueblo de San Carlos on the east side of San Carlos Creek. The town grew quickly and by 1865 it had a population of 350 people. The town's growth was due in part to its location at an important trade route connecting Mission Valley with Stockton and Sacramento. In 1868, San Carlos became part of what is now Contra Costa County. In 1932, San Carlos incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of Northern California's largest cities with over 100,000 residents. San Carlos has been home to many notable people throughout its history including ranchers John Coyle and James Irvine; politicians such as George W. Norris; scientists such as Karl Pearson; businesspeople like Nelson Bunker Hunt and Edwin Leland; entertainers like Rudy Vallee and Sammy Davis Jr.; and athletes like 48 Hours' Bob Barker.
The first European to visit San Carlos was a Portuguese missionary in 1542, who named the spot San Carlos after the Spanish general and conqueror Juan de la Cruz. The mission district went through rapid growth during the 18th century as missions were established all over California. By 1795, there were 25 missions in San Carlos District boundaries. In 1821, Mexico ceded California to the United States of America and by 1848, only 7 missions remained in California. In 1852, Mexico again regained control of California and on July 4th of that year, Mexican soldier José Joaquín Peralta assassinated General Manuel Micheltorena at San Francisco Cathedral. This event led to years of instability and violence in what is now known as the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). On September 11th of 1861, American forces invaded Mexico and successfully defended Los Angeles from an attack by Mexican forces. As a result of this invasion, Californians voted on November 12th to join the U.S., with many feeling that they had been taken advantage of by theirnew neighbors. The original mission district included parts of today’s Santa Clara County and Alameda County; however most Missions were converted into secular institutions such as schools or hospitals after statehood was granted to California on January 1st, 1850. The last Catholic priest died at Mission Santa Cruz in 1968; all othermissionaries have since retired or passed away including Father Miguel Mariscal y Our Lady Of Loreto who served from 1951-1968 at Mission Dolores
