In 1876 Johnnie Cochran purchased property adjacent to Ladd’s store on 5th Street for what would become Cochran Firearms & Ammunition Company Ltd., one of San Carlos’ most successful businesses ever! Cochran soon became known as “the Father Of Pistol Shooting In California” due to his expertise with handguns (among others) across all genres including Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS), Target shooting (TSS), Law Enforcement use (LEU), revolver shooting (RHS), target practice (TPT), USPSA Handgun Championships Competitions (HGC), and many more! In 1903 Cochran relocated his business to 8th Avenue between Folsom Street and Broadway where he operated it until his death in 1957. San Carlos is a small city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 17,613 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. The name "San Carlos" comes from Spanish for "stone Canon". In 1849, gold was discovered near modern-day Petaluma and Fillmore Streets in San Carlos. This led to the town being founded in 1850 by Colonel James Fenton as a site for an assay office and other military purposes. The first post office opened in 1851; it was renamed San Carlos in 1892 after California's 3rd Infantry Regiment lost its battle at Cerro Gordo on November 8th of that year. A hotel and several stores were built along Fillmore Street between Petaluma Boulevard and El Camino Real during the 1860s until they burned down in 1906. During World War II, San Carlos served as an important drop-off point for soldiers going into northern Santa Clara County to fight the Japanese war effort; many businesses closed during this time because of high prices for food brought in by Allied forces or because of discrimination against Japanese Americans living there. In 1951, American president Dwight Eisenhower moved his presidential library from Gettysburg to san carlos due to its proximity to then-presidential home ranch Rancho Bernardo de la Vega; Eisenhower donated land for the library on which much of downtown still rests today. In 1957, San Carlos became one of six cities within the newly formed Bay Area Rapid Transit system when BART began service through downtown streetscape changes following construction of the Golden Gate Bridge across Main Street/University Avenue (now Interstate 80). Downtown business districts such as Fisherman's Wharf were quickly abandoned as BART ridership soared and new development developed along University Avenue east of Market Street (formerly known as Third Street). The present day town is located on a peninsula formed by two creeks which join near the foot of Mount Hamilton. The peninsula is surrounded by rugged hillsides and includes rolling vineyards that stretch for miles around the edge of town. Downtown is filled with antique shops, boutiques, and restaurants; while Point Lobos lighthouse dominates the skyline. One important aspect of San Carlos’ history is its role in California’s gold rush era. Many people from throughout Northern California came to find wealth in this new land which had been discovered by Spanish traders in 1769. In 1849, construction began on what would become one of America’s largest watermills – Don Pedro Mill – which yielded over 1 million dollars worth of gold coins during its heyday between 1850-1855. Today, remnants of Don Pedro Mill can still be seen today along Evans Creek just outside downtownSan Carlos; while Point Lobos lighthouse remains an iconic symbol for all who visit this stunning community
In 1821, the area now known as San Carlos was part of Mexico. The United States acquired it in 1847 as part of the Rancho Santa Anita Mexican land grant. The first Anglo inhabitants were cattle buyers and cowboys attracted to the rich grazing country. A post office was established at San Carlos in 1851, and a school began operating in 1861. The town gradually developed into a small farming community with few businesses or residents until 1915 when it became the site of an experimental airfield used by American planes during World War I.
