In 1892, the San Carlos County Rifle and Pistol Club was founded. It met at the old post office in downtown San Carlos to shoot pistols and rifles. In 1899, they formed a club association with the purpose of providing officers for their range at Indian Wells Park. The first rifle match took place on July 5th, 1899. The club also purchased a shotgun from Hutton Firearms in 1901. In 1907, they organized their first annual meeting which resulted in the organization of the county rifle and pistol clubs into federations throughout California. They also adopted the national pattern 10 gauge shotgun as their standard firearm for shooting matches and tournaments. The late 1800s were a time of significant growth for gun rights activism in San Carlos County due to advancements made by both men and women in political power within America. Women played an important role during this time as activists who cared about firearms reform and pushed for stronger gun laws across the country. One such woman was Alice Paulwho worked tirelessly towards reforming gun control laws in her home state of Kentucky while living in San Carlos County during this time period

In the 1800s, San Carlos was a small town in southern California. It was known for its produce and cattle ranching. The town was also home to one of the first gunsmiths in California. In 1851, John Fenton bought land in San Carlos and started a gunsmith business. His shop became known as Fenton & Sons Gun Shop. In 1865, another gunsmith opened up in San Carlos by named Elisha Peake. He continued to work at Fenton & Sons until his death in 1922. From 1865-1922, San Carlos had three different gunsmiths who were responsible for creating and maintaining the town's firearms culture.

The first European settlers to arrive in San Carlos were the Mexican soldiers who garrisoned the Rancho San Marcos de la Alameda (now part of Fremont) during 1849-1851. One of the first businesses established in San Carlos was The Coffee House which opened on November 10, 1853. In 1872, a group of German immigrants founded an agricultural trading post known as "Gleiwald". After purchasing several hundred acres near present day Menlo Park, they built a large ranch house and made it their home until 1907 when they sold it to George Eastman for $1 million. A post office called San Carlos was established at this location on December 12, 1852, and remained in operation until 1861. In 1863, local merchants formed the Citizens' Bank and Trust Company which became one of the largest bank companies in California. The company operated from its original building until 1951 when it moved to 650 First Street in Fremont. During World War II many jobs were created by war production plants located nearby such as Bechtel Corporation's Ballistics Division plant #4 which manufactured ammunition for American tanks; United Aircraft & Motor Corp.'s Plant 17 which produced bombers for America; and Raytheon Co.'s Los Alamos Laboratory complex which developed nuclear weapons technology culminating with America's first thermonuclear test on July 16th 1945 at Cape Canaveral Florida!

The City of San Carlos was established on December 12, 1847 by Supervisor José Antonio Peralta and Captain Gabriel Orozco. It was named after the Santa Clara River that flowed through the area. The first post office opened in 1850. The city grew rapidly due to its fertile soil, natural resources, and trade with nearby towns. In 1871, San Carlos became a part of the newly formed County of Los Angeles. In 1905, San Carlos experienced another Growth spurt as it became one of the largest villages in Southern California when it annexed Rancho Palos Verdes and other smaller communities east of the Santa Monica Mountains. In 1916, San Carlos became a part of the new City of Los Angeles through Proposition 20 because it had outgrown its current boundaries as a village and desired to become an urban center like Los Angeles. On July 14, 1948, during World War II Japanese forces attacked Ulysses S. Grant High School in downtown San Carlos killing at least 39 students and faculty members before being repelled by American troops using grenades and machine-guns from atop armored vehicles parked on top of high school buildings across town. The attack has been called one of the deadliest attacks on American soil occurred during World War II Today there is still memorials to those who lost their lives that can be found all around town including inside Grant High School where research is currently being done into possibly identifying which weapon(s) were used in this tragedy
In 1821, the area that is now San Carlos was part of Rancho Santa Clara. The rancho extended along the present-day border of San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties. In 1846, following Mexican independence from Spain, Mexico granted Rancho Santa Clara to John C. Fremont. Commodore John D. Sloat purchased the land in 1849 and named it for his friend and mentor Commodore George F. Sloat, Jr., who had served as a U.S. Navy captain during the American Revolution and later helped organize California's first congressional delegation in 1850. The mission of San Carlos Mission was founded on July 29, 1798 by Father José de la Cruz y Vargas with the help of Pico de la Hoz and twelve others from Rancho La Purísima Concepción del Río Grande near modern-day Paso Robles, California. The mission was abandoned in 1800 because of lack of support from local landowners who did not want their land improved by foreigners; however, Father José continued building a chapel until his death in 1802 at age 72 years old while still working on the mission complex north of what is now downtown San Carlos (now known as Old TownSan Carlos). After Father José's death, work stopped due to lack of money and manpower; however, some Spanish ruins remain today including a small chapel built by him as well as an old barracks used by military forces when San Carlos Mission became an abortive gold rush town in 1851 after being discovered by prospectors led by Francis Drake on October 3 that year while exploring southern Alta California
