San Carlos is a small town in California, located on the border of Kern County and Fresno County. The population was 7,513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit San Carlos were Mexican fur traders who traveled through the area in 1827 looking for new sources of silver and other minerals. In 1846, San Carlos became part of Mexico when it was acquired by President Santa Anna during the Mexican-American War. In 1851, San Carlos was designated as a military post by General Antonio López de Santa Anna to support his campaign against California's Mexican defenders. The post served as a stopover for supplies and troops moving up the Central Valley to attack Sacramento and Stockton. On July 15, 1861, after Battle of Bear Flag (1859), Mexico ceded California to the United States under an agreement known as Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On October 16th, 1861 US soldiers burned down Fort San Marcos following their victory over Mexican forces at Palo Altochico Creek Bridge (now mile marker 27 on Interstate 5). As part of this treaty, Mexico also ceded all but 6 miles along the Colorado River from Baja California to Sonoma County including present-day San Carlos. In 1865 US General Doniphan transferred ownership of 1/2 hour’s drive east from Atascadero on Isla Vista Peninsula to San Carlos after finding that there were few permanent residents living there since most had emigrated during or soon after Commodore Perry’s successful expedition against Mexico in 1846 that resulted in what is now Southern California becoming American soil. The community was founded by Missionaries Spanish Catholics who arrived in 1797 to establish a new mission in present-day San Carlos County. The town grew quickly and by 1837 had a population of over 350 people. In 1849, the Mexican government renamed San Carlos County after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as part of efforts to whiteize California. The name change did not reflect the diversity of the community and it continued to be called San Carlos until 1912 when it changed again to honor General José Joaquín Cámpora y Gómez (1814-1892). The first buildings in what is nowSan Carlos were built in 1847 on land donated by Juan Bautista Alvarado. Over time, other residents added their homes and businesses until there were more than 100 residences in the town by 1860. By 1870, most of the town had been destroyed during an earthquake that struck Northern California. rebuilt quickly with local materials and labor, San Carlos continue to thrive through World War II and into the postwar period as a small agricultural center with some Manufacturing activity but little else going on outside of agriculture or services provided by law enforcement officers and churches. In 1969, Hispanics became U.S.-citizens through Proposition 8 which proposed changing state law to allow automatic citizenship for all individuals regardless of race or ethnicity without any affirmative action measures being taken towards those within minority groups specifically interested in becoming citizens. This event led to increased poverty and economic inequality withinSanCarlos due primarily to racist attitudes towards Mexicans while also reducing access to education opportunities for many within this demographic group throughout Northern California overall includingSanCarlos itself
