In 1846, Mexican settlers founded San Carlos mission in what is now the city of San Carlos. The first pastor, Fray Francisco de la Cruz, arrived in December of that year and began missionary work. In 1850, a second group of Mexican settlers arrived and founded the Mission Santa Clara. They were followed by more Californios in 1852. By 1870, there were over 200 people living at this missiontown near Stockton. The mission was abandoned in 1876 because of fire damage done by a previous resident’s stove. However, the Catholic Church continued to operate from the ruins until 1912 when it merged with other missions into the new Franciscan Province of Interior California. The town slowly lost its population until it was completely demolished by fire in 1922 due to vandalism by local children who believed that their homes could be rebuilt on the site if they only found enough money. Today nothing remains of these once thriving towns except for a few foundations and a few scattered pieces of clothing or furniture which have been donated to museums or used as part of exhibits about San Carlos history. What is left behind tells an important story about how small communities can grow and thrive while stillserving as faithful havens for religious worship and community life during difficult times – even during Prohibition!

The first church on the site was dedicated in 1819. In 1839, San Carlos became part of Mexico and the mission was abandoned. In 1851, San Carlos was re-established as an autonomous parish under the jurisdiction of Durango. On July 16, 1863, it became a town when it amalgamated with other towns within Durango County. On January 1, 1909, San Carlos became a city under the same name. It is now located in Baja California State in southernMexico.
