To build Villa Rica they traveled upriver through what is now Fresno County looking for land that could be used for ranching (Moseson & Haggerty pgs 583 – 584). They found enough land but there wasn't any water available so they built a dam on Upper Sacramento River called Dominguez Creek which allowed them access to water from upstream When Rancho Rinconada started up in 1848 about 12 miles east of present day downtownSanCarlosRanchoFresno owner Manuel Margarita bought 8 acres from Urquiza . Margarita also adjacent property on present day northeast corner Fourth Street between Peralta Avenue East & Mission Boulevard donated lots adjoining Rancho Rinconada extending back 1 ½ miles This donation set off much debate within early Mexican American settlers about whether developing these lands should be done by Indians or white men given that very few Native Americans lived nearby at that time (Gonzalez-Barrera unpublished paper ). One argument made against developing this land by indigenous people was that doing so would infringe upon their hunting rights 3 Indian hunters living closeby at that time included Captains Francisco Quevedo y Rivera , José Antonio Reyes y Sarmienta 4 While others argued that if these lands were developed by Indians then Anglo Christians might want too own them since they would have exclusive access to timber 2 There are reports claiming Captain Reyes killed an Apache warrior who claimed possession of some nearby cattlehide goods (Kerrigan forthcoming) .
