Ammunition has been a part of the San Carlos community since the early 1800s. The first shots fired in what is now San Carlos were shot from cannons on Fort Point, located on present-day Battery Hill. Ammunition manufacturing started in 1853 when Alfred W. Cook and his brother, Elias, founded the Alameda Rifle company in Fremont. In 1865, ammunition manufacturer J.B. Higgins began producing smokeless powder for pistols at their plant on Market Street in San Carlos. In 1898, Winchester Manufacturing Company moved to San Carlos from Winchester, England and began making rifles there as well. By 1912, the town had over 20 businesses employing around 100 people including several paper mills that manufactured grades of leadshot, buckshot and munitions such as cannonballs and exploding bombs. The outbreak of World War I interrupted these activities but production resumed soon after with new plants built near Coyote Valley and at Atherton Mesa for blasting rock for mining purposes as well as supplying ammunition to both sides of the war effort. post-warUMass produced many rounds of ammo including 9mm Parabellum pistol rounds which were developed by John Browning (founder of Browning Firearms) while he was working at Winchester during WWI
