The first Europeans to enter San Bruno were the Spanish in 1769. The area that is today known as San Bruno was part of the Rancho de las Pulgas, which was granted to José Joaquin Crespí by Governor Manuel Nieto in 1834. In 1868, a small community called Altoon Grove sprang up around a post office and store on the corner of Church and Mountain Streets. However, there was no real development until 1870 when Dr. George Waugh established his practice at what is now Masonic Avenue and Parnell Street. In 1872, another doctor, Dr. Hiram Maxim, arrived from England and set up his practice near what is now Pacific Avenue and Market Street. By 1899, both doctors had left for various reasons but their legacy lives on in the name of both clinics: Dr. George Waugh Walk & Medical Clinic (later renamed Park Avenue Medical Center) and Hiram Maxim General Hospital (now University Hospitals).
