San Bruno is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 25,787 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on October 15, 1887 by nine American citizens who named it after San Bruno Mountain near present-day Palo Alto. It became part of the City of San Francisco on January 1, 1889. The first post office in San Bruno opened in 1879 and closed in 1881 due to low patronage rates. The first store in town was the "Anglo- Chinese Store" which was established by Wai Hing and his wife Chiu Wing Chau in1885. In 1888, the first school opened for students grades one through four under the name of "Palo Alto Female School". In 1895, a library was built and used until 1919 when it burned down. In 1896, three men– George Hearst (1860-1934), founder of Hearst Corporation; Willis Barton (1863-1937), president of Los Angeles Electric Railway Company; and John Drysdale (1862-1938), partner with Barton in Los Angeles Municipal Light Company– organized what would become known as the First California Republican Party Convention at their home on May 14th which nominated James Giddings for President of the United States as an independent candidate instead of accepting nomination from Grover Cleveland (the incumbent). During World War I service with stints with General Lemuel economizing food ration stamps he obtained from military stores to buy items such as cigarettes he then could sell without being taxed Giddings lost to Woodrow Wilson but this experience helped him develop his public speaking skills later that year when he ran for Governor of New York against Tammany Hall controlled William Jennings Bryan On September 9th 1905 voters approved incorporation into the City of San Francisco by referendum passing a resolution 787 to 136 popularly favoring incorporation over annexation because they felt it would protect their interests while also increasing property values within town limits During World War II Santa Clara Valley Air National Guard Base located just outside town served as an overflow airfield providing logistical support for Navy bombers flying missions over Japan during 1944 Operation Crossroads that produced significant damage including aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and USS Hornet
On November 9, 1853, San Bruno was incorporated as a town in Contra Costa County, California. On January 1, 1854, the name was changed to San Francisco. The City of San Francisco was founded on December 14 of that year.
