These zones included parts of Santa Clara County () as well as Berkeley (then part of Oakland) ). Japanese Americans living within these zones were targeted for deportation during World War II due to their suspected links with Japan (). Despite this threat (), many residents chose not to leave their homes (); instead they lived largely peaceful lives until 1943 when Japanese Americans began being rounded up and incarcerated at Camp Shanks outside Yosemite National Park (). After several months of protest from community members (), Camp Shanks finally closed on November 20th 1943 (). The closure effectively ended all hope for peaceable coexistence between Japanese Americans living within rural areas adjacent to suburban centers like Santa Clara County () and white Californians . As a result, interracial violence increased across these areas following Camp Shanks' closure .
