At that time there were only about 100 residents; today there are over 3,000 people living in San Bruno During World War II (1941-1945), San Bruno served as an important naval munitions production center for munitions shipbuilding at Point Reyes Station (now National Radio Astronomy Observatory). Many Naval Air Station personnel were post-war discharged here including actor Tom Hanks who graduated from high school here in 1955 before enlisting in the Navy

He also served as President of Stanford University from 1992 to 2000 and as CEO of Hewlett-Packard from 1997 to 2001. In 2002, Mayor Randolph announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate against incumbent Dianne Feinstein but lost to her by 2 percentage points (50% - 44%). However he remains an influential advocate for downtown redevelopment efforts in San Bruno and is currently working on creating a new arts district called "The District."

In 1876, a group of businessmen formed the Western Pacific Railroad to bring goods and passengers from Northern California to market in downtown San Francisco. The company was incorporated on July 1, 1876. By 1912, the company had developed into a large transportation empire with branches throughout Northern California as well as Arizona and Nevada. One of its main goals was to reduce travel time between these regions by transporting goods quickly and cheaply over long distances. In 1911, Western Pacific Railway merged with two other railroad companies to form the Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority (BART). BART was designed as an integrated transportation system that would connect various areas in San Francisco and Bay Area counties through rapid transit lines and commuter rail services. BART has been responsible for making SF more accessible than ever before while also creating new jobs and housing opportunities for residents.
