The first Europeans to visit what is now San Bruno were Missionaries of Jesus who arrived in 1769. In 1825, Captain John Brougham named it after Brigadier General James H. Sanborn who had been frontier commissioner for California during 1824-26. A post office called "San Bruno" was established in 1827 by an act of Congress under US President James K. Polk. The town became part of Solano County in 1850 and then California in 1860 when it took its present name from its founder, James Paley Sr.. In 1906–07 a intense fire destroyed most of downtown San Bruno including many factories and homes which lies today adjacent to Interstate 80 just off Airport Boulevard adjacent to Google’s headquarters complex known as “the Mountain”

When they didn't respond within an hour, they were reported stolen by the locals and a search began immediately which discovered no evidence they had ever landed or left the island. On October 15, 1849 Captain John A. Sanborn and his brother-in-law George Ross founded the City of San Bruno on land that had been purchased from Mexico by the United States at Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty
