The first European to visit what is now San Bruno was Father Junipero Serra on September 7, 1769 during his surveys for Mission Santa Clara de Asís. In 1851, Judge James Wickersham recommended that San Francisco create an agricultural reservation around what is now Point Reyes Station so developers could build homes there instead of along Market Street near the Chinatown district. So much opposition from local farmers led Wickersham to change his recommendation to exclude agriculture from the reservation and make it an open space for settlement by white men only. In 1885, when Bayview Terrace subdivision became part of town, one developer wanted to name it "San Bruno". After some debate between residents and officials about whether or not to use a racially derogatory term like "nigger", Supervisor John Doherty ordered all names conforming to anglicized English spelling - such as "Bayview" - at that time being the only way for new subdivisions within town to have sensible names ( doctrine known as Topeka Rules). An effort was made by then Mayor George Westinghouse to get rid of Topeka Rules but failed when all members of the City Council voted against him; thus Topeka Rules survived into modern times as part of municipal law without any mayoral directive from either side! In 1913, Bay View Terrace was renamed Upper Richmond Heights after Alice Roosevelt Longworth who had married President Franklin D Roosevelt at Hyde Park Corner on May 14th that year also becoming First Lady Of The United States! San Bruno is a city in San Mateo County, California, located on the northshore of San Francisco Bay. The population was 83,471 at the 2010 census. The city was founded by Father José Gomez in 1876 as a small Catholic mission. It became an American town on July 1, 1886 when it incorporated as a city. The first post office in San Bruno opened in 1881. The name "San Bruno" meaning "in between" may be derived from its location on two hills between San Francisco and Oakland. In 1892, the United States Post Office moved from downtown to what is now North First Street after merging with other local post offices. In 1948, Mayor George Moscone declared October 15th "San Bruno Day". On that date, the City of San Bruno celebrated its centennial with a public celebration including parade and open-air marketplace along North First Street. A year later in 1949 another public celebration took place to commemorate 100 years of progressivism and democracy within the city limits since incorporation; this time also included parade and open-air marketplace along North First Street. In 1960, voters passed Proposition 13 which repealed most of the old special taxes imposed by previous governments on businesses within city boundaries – including those levied on cigarettes and alcohol sales – making way for an all new graduated income tax system that would last until 1997 under then Mayor Dianne Feinstein (D). That same year saw another milestone for San Bruno when it became one of only five cities nationwide to receive unanimous approval from their citizens for Measure B – which created Park Slope Neighborhood Services Districts adjacent to South Portal Avenue - ultimately providing much needed street life and community services to many low-income residents who had long relied upon nearby neighborhoods without them. In 1990 negotiations began for annexation by East Palo Alto which eventually occurred that same year becoming part of present day San Mateo County with all precincts excepting ones near Interstate 280 annexed into what had once been called "San Bruno". Today's population totals over 120K people living spread out over various neighborhoods throughout both counties’ jurisdictions

In 1914, the population of San Bruno reached 45,000 residents. However, because of World War I and subsequent economic hard times, the population declined gradually until it reached 30,000 by 1970. During the 1960s and 1970s, there were several large changes taking place in San Bruno including the opening of Interstate 80 and the erection of a new freeway system that spanned most of Silicon Valley. These redevelopment projects led to increased traffic congestion within the city limits as well as an increase in crime rates which have since been decreasing over time.
