The history of firearms and laser technology in San Bruno, California can be traced back to the early days of the city. In 1916, two brothers named George and Harry Withers founded a small gunsmith shop in what is now known as the Withers Building on Market Street. The shop was soon busy enough that George decided to open his own store. In 1919, Withers opened a second store on Pacific Avenue in San Bruno. This location became known as the Gun Shop Annex and handled all sorts of firearms from pistols to shotguns to rifles. It was during this time that George began working on his first laser device. His laser was powered by an engine that he constructed himself out of brass tubing, copper wires, and a glass lens. The Laser Device Company was started up and produced its first lasers in 1921. It wasn’t until 1923 that they finally got their hands on a Raytheon R-2VCO frequency control amplifier which allowed them to produce high quality lasers at a much lower price point than their competitors. It wasn’t until 1957 that Hughes Electronics Corporation introduced their own version of the R-2VCO amplifier which would become known as the Hughes–Earl Cray Z3A/1A quantum beam tube Amplifier (QBE). This amplifier allowed for higher power levels and better image quality when producing lasers. It also allowed Hughes Electronics Corporation to make their first lasers into Compact Lasers (CL) which were eventually adopted by other companies such as Philips or Cree Incorporated. With this new technology, Hughes Electronics Corporation quickly became one of the leading players in the Laser Technology Industry!
