In 1906 Mayor Frank Stagg published his plans for creating an urban area bounded by Market Street on the north side and Sloat Boulevard on the south side along what is now Union Square West (now Geary Boulevard). On July 25th 1907 Stagg submitted a resolution to city council calling for annexation of all of Fremont Township including present-day San Bruno. Three days later council voted 31 to 0 to accept annexation into San Francisco with boundary changes that would see present-day streets such as Stockton Street become part of University Avenue while Mission Street became part of Ashbury Avenue

However, because of its location near major transportation hubs such as BART and Highway 101 accessibilty (), low crime rates (), and mild climate (), there has been recent growth in this community thanks to its many popular tourist destinations including The Beach Boys shrine () which opened in 2000 adjacent to Interstate 680 exit 15A; Googleplex ();[2] and Miriam'suilt (). In 2011–12, budget cuts led to the closing of several businesses within town limits: two restaurants (Restaurante El Progreso and L’Atelier de la Belle Epoque), one bakery (La Boulangerie des Arbres), one printing business (Poppin'), one car wash ('L'Auto Wash'), two bars ('Joe's Bar & Grill', 'Moonlight Lounge'), three convenience stores ('Cafeteria La Parilla', 'Jenny's Chinese Buffet', 'Big Jim's') as well as four residential units that had been leased ahead without proper permits from city officials ().[3][4] This left residents struggling to afford food or find other forms of entertainment outside their homes while also effecting social cohesion within the small community since almost everyone who used those businesses now resides elsewhere within town limits.
