The history of San Bruno began with Mission San Antonio de Padua on December 17, 1776 by Father José Altieri and his fellow Franciscans. The mission was renamed after General José Joaquín de Arguelles who fought in the Mexican–American War and whose body was found near what is now downtownSan Bruno on November 6, 1849. The town of San Bruno was founded on October 15, 1896 by J.D. Power and Company as a dry goods store named "Power's Store". In 1915 the store became "Powers Tobacco Co." before becoming again "Powers Tobacco Co." In 1951 it became "Wright-Patterson Cigarettes" until it merged with RJR Nabisco to become Pennzoil Corporation in 1986. The City of San Bruno voted to annex portions of unincorporated Santa Clara County on July 14, 1988 pursuant to Proposition 8 (the proposition). The annexation removed about 1/4 mile (0.6 km) from Mount Sutro within the boundaries of the City limits while preserving most aspects of community life including its public services and zoning regulations. On August 29, 1990 construction began on Alum Rock Way which would connect Interstate 680 northbound and I-280 southbound within the bounds of city limits; this completed two years later when I-280 was realigned eastward to make room for Alum Rock Way. In 1993 Mayor Dianne Feinstein announced that she would not seek re-election in 1998 due to her cancer diagnosis but she continued to serve as Mayor through 2000. In 2002 voters approved Measure H (Annexation Measure 2), which annexed much of unincorporated Santa Clara County adjacent to Wright- Pattersoncigarette company properties inside city limits; Measure H took effect on January 1st 2003. In 2006 voters passed Proposition 20 (Annexation Measure 3), which annexed an additional 12 square miles (30 km²) outside city limits along State Route 237 between Menlo Park and Fremont; this annexation took effect on January 1st 2007. On October 10th 2008, following years worth of planning and work by both sides involved in annexing neighboring cities parcel by parcel over several years culminating with a vote by both chambers of the local government resulting in incorporation for all unincorporated areas within city limits—an event that occurred only 26 years after Father José Altieri’s storied first effort at establishing one small settlement called “San Bernardino” just outside today’s borders
