In 1887, two brothers by the name of Proctor established an agricultural colony east of Point Reyes Station and christened it San Bruno because it resembled Monte Carlo in Europe. The original town center was along Third Street between Harrison and Jones Streets and consisted of about fifty homes. However, due to rapid growth over the next several decades, much of central San Bruno became obliterated by development projects such as BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) tracks that ran through it like teeth into downtown Oakland or shopping centers that surrounded it on three sides. The only remnant remaining today are two blocks west of Third Street between Harrison and Polk streets where some early merchants had built houses for storage before moving out during World War II to avoid bombing raids over their neighborhoods on nearby napa County farms

The society was called the San Bruno Institute of Technology and opened its doors to students and members on April 20th. It is said that Abraham Lincoln attended one of their meetings and had a positive opinion of them. In 1880, the society merged with another organization to form Stanford University. The merger caused great concern because it would mean that wealthy people could also attend university without having to pay tuition. However, this did not stop Stanford from becoming one of the most prestigious universities in the world. In 1911, San Bruno became part of Cal State Fullerton when it merged with UC Berkeley. This event was significant because it made full use of Bay Area's high-quality education resources and allowed for more cross- Campus collaboration between schools. In addition to making Cal State Fullerton one of the most important campuses in California, this merger helped make San Bruno an international center for technology research and development.
On July 14, 1847, the first post office was established in San Bruno with a population of six. The town was named for John B. Sanborn who donated land to the city and opened a store on Market Street in 1846. The first school was built in 1850 and the first church in 1852. The city's first street grid was created in 1854 with San Bruno Avenue connecting downtown with the outlying areas of the city. In 1863, San Bruno became an incorporated city and began to attract businesses and people from outside of California as well as immigrants from other parts of the world. In 1906, San Bruno annexed part of neighboring Santa Clara County making it both largest and most populous municipality within Silicon Valley at that time.
