San Bruno, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 96,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Bruno were ranch hands who camped on Hwy 101 near present-day Mountain View in 1838. A site for a town was chosen by surveyors in 1849 and incorporation took place on February 14, 1850. The name “San Bruno” was derived from the Spanish word "santoban" meaning “a place of rest” or “sanctuary” after General Antonio José de Oviedo y Costilla's column passed through here while marching southward from Mission Dolores to Placer County in 1776. In 1868, portions of Palo Alto and Menlo Park were annexed to San Bruno and the city grew rapidly with an influx of Irish immigrants who settled around University Avenue (now Alameda Street). In 1904, following the completion of Stanford University's new campus down Castro Street, many students moved into San Bruno which became known as "the Village." Businesses began moving out as transportation became available and jobs opened up in nearby Palo Alto and Menlo Park for workers on Silicon Valley's first major industrial project - spinning cotton during World War I However, Race riots broke out throughout Northern California during the 1930s when African Americans working within white households refused to be taken advantage of by their employers and/or given inferior wages. This led to mass arrests and deportations of people from Marin County including blacksmiths, plumbers, grocery store clerks and more; this also included many members of San Bruno's small but vocal black community which had long supported its own autonomy despite discrimination by whites. A group led by then-Mayor Gordon Parks attempted unsuccessfully to raise money for a public safety campaign called "No Racism at Our City" that included enforced segregation inside city limits among races until 1951 when Parks' successor Will Rogers made integration one year ago today a permanent fixture with affirmative action programs starting immediately . All residents are required to attend public education whether they reside within city boundaries or not since 1924 when educational opportunities were statewide mandated due largely to Proposition 8 (Referendum #8), also known as the Briggs Amendment which limited voting rights based on race/ethnicity among Californians over 21 years old . Prior thereto there had been separate schools for races other than White & Black only . After passage of Prop 8 & subsequent enforcement leading various lawsuits (& certain convictions) numerous businesses closed shop refuting Proposition 8 before it even went into effect! Today most services still carried out without any form of segregated seating or knowledge thanks largely to efforts spearheaded by Mayor Ed Murray BART isn't immune either with requests totalling $2 million dollars allocated specifically towards diversity initiatives since 2012
