A year later the company abandoned its plans for the plant because it found environmental problems with adjacent wetlands that would be impacted by production but local activists successfully lobbied against the plant from then-city Manager Harry Stampler until finally it was cancelled in 1978 after just three years (despite protests from then Mayor Willie Brown)). After several more years their efforts paid off when ExxonMobil leased about 2/3rds of an acre south of where today's City Hall stands (), resulting in Chevron building its first chemical processing facility west coast outside Texas back in 1984. There has been much recent development around this site: most notably Google's $1 billion headquarters project which includes many new buildings on or near campus soil ().
