San Bruno is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 491,1007 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Peninsula of San Francisco Bay. The city was founded in 1885 by businessman and politician James Buchanan Grant as a small farming community named "Hillsborough". Grants donated land to the city for its expansion purposes. The first post office opened in 1887. In 1906, San Bruno became part of the newly formed City of San Francisco; it merged with another local municipality, Kensington Heights, on February 28, 1907. On May 25, 1951, San Bruno annexed Rossmoor which had been a rural area east of town since before World War II. On October 14th 1903 an electric light company was organized and christened "San Bruno Electric Light Company". The first fire break occurred on December 1st 1903 when two men working for the company set off an incendiary device while trying to fix a power line near their plant site. One man was killed and one critically injured; this event marked the beginning of what would become known as "the Great Fire" which destroyed over 90% of downtown San Bruno (and most of Kensington Heights) including many homes and businesses within six weeks

In 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces burned down several buildings within sight of Uptown Municipal Building on Harrison Street between Market Street and Third Street; two years later Uptown Municipal Building reopened after reconstruction under American military command
