San Bernardino County was founded on November 3, 1875 by George C. Boggs and named for the San Bernardino Mountains which separate it from Orange County. The original population of only 8,000 was largely composed of Native Americans who hunted game in the area. In 1892, a post office was established at present-day Riverside and the first mail service between Los Angeles and San Bernardino arrived in 1893. In 1911, a library was built in Present-day Riverside and the county seat became what is now Fontana.
