In 1871, following several years of intense goldmining operations in nearby Mono County, many people left for central California to join the Gold Rush. They found good farmland but also bad weather and rugged hills that made travel difficult or impossible. By 1870 most of the miners had returned to Nevada or Arizona but a few families remained behind as ranch hands on large ranches around Monrovia-Montebello (now Montebello) eastward into what is now southern Riverside County

In 1916–1917 during World War I, sanborns plowed snow off of Mount Wilson which made it possible for residents to build their homes on top of the mountain after being forbidden to do so during war-time restrictions
The San Bernardino Mountains were first settled by the Tongva people about 10,000 years ago. The current name for the mountain range is derived from Spanish, "San Bernadino", which means "the place of the white huckleberry tree". The first European to sight and map this area was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. In 1821, a small community called Fort Tejon was established on what is now eastern side of San Bernardino Mountain. In 1864, a group of Mormon missionaries arrived in California and set up an electric generating station in San Bernardino County. The town of San Bernardino thrived during this time as many people came to live and work there. In February 1915, two brothers named Johnnie and Clarence Goodyear moved their families from nearby Redlands to establish what would later become known as Riverside County. They started a citrus orchard and market business here that continued until they sold it in 1951 to the United Fruit Company. This company also founded Citrus Heights Elementary School (now known as Riverside Junior College) in 1926 and located it on land now east of Interstate 15 near present-day Joshua Tree National Park. In October 1927, Charles Manson traveled from Los Angeles via Stockton to visit his family at Redlands before leaving for Marin County with his girlfriend Susan Atkins
