In 1868, after Mexican troops burned down the mission, San Bernardino became part of California. During World War II, the United StatesArmy built several airfields and barracks in and around San Bernardino County. One of these was known as Air Base Shaw near present-day Victorville. In 1942, when Japan began its attack on Pearl Harbor, American forces were already stationed at Air Base Shaw to help defend Southern California against Japanese aggression. On December 7th 1941, Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor killing more than 120 American sailors and marines. The war ended with Japan's surrender two days later and many Americans returned home from abroad. Many people who served during World War II are still living in San Bernardino County today. After World War II ended, there was much discussion about how to handle postwar integration of America's racial diversity. Some wanted to keepSan Bernardino an all-white community while others wanted it to become more diverse and inclusive. Ultimately, because of political pressure from African Americans who felt they were being left out of society due to race segregation laws at that time (and also because white Californians thought that black people should move back into their parent's homes),San Bernardino passed an ordinance allowing blacks to vote in 1943 under then-Gov.-elect Romulus Baca (D).
