Valley View school district #6 is one of five districts in San Bernardino that serve students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The city of San Bernardino annexed part of Riverside County in 1912 which increased its population by 10,000 people to over 100,000 people by 1916 when it became known as "San Bernardino County". San Bernardino, California is a city in southern California on the central valley of the U.S. state of California, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Los Angeles and 33 miles (51 km) north-northwest of San Francisco. As of 2010, the population was 21,695. The city's ZIP code is 92110. The first human beings to live in San Bernardino County were Native Americans who lived in what is now Inyo County before moving to today's Riverside County around 1800. The area that would become San Bernardino was first inhabited by Acoma Pueblo people at least 1250 years ago according to archaeological evidence. In 1824, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded in what is now downtown SAN BERNARDINO with land grants from Mexico City to Spanish families as part of Rancho Cucamonga Province south of present-day Pasadena. The mission had an official name—Stations of the Cross—but it became known popularly as "Mision Santa Barbara" because Father José Gomez de la Torre served as its first pastor). In 1879, portions of Rancho Cucamonga and Rancho Bernardo including present-day San Bernardino Heights were organized into a new county called Imperial Valley which included most of what are now Riverside and Orange counties; however, MISSION SAN GABRIEL ARCÁNGEL remained a part of San Bernardino county until 1907 when it was divided between Riverside and Orange counties pursuant to Proposition 8 (the Unlawful Election Act), also known as the Redistricting Plan Amendment No. 7 passed by voters on November 3rd, 1906. On February 14th 1909, following passage by Congress under the National Defense Act 507(b)(2), all but two days per year were set aside for religious services within the limits prescribed by law atMission Dolores Chapel within El Cajon Municipal Airport; this day remains celebrated each year as International Religious Freedom Day in honor of those who preserved religious freedom during this time period throughout America). During World War II several thousand American servicemen married local women and children inside MISSION SAN GABRIEL ARCÁNGEL; these marriages were not recognized by military authorities so many soldiers returned home without children after hostilities ended.. Many veterans brought their wives back into town after they left service or traveling overseas while others formed families with local women who had been recruited through advertising or social work programs sponsored by various denominations.. After VE DAY there was an increase in unmarried mothers working outside the home due to increased opportunities for employment during wartime.. Today only a few hundred residents remain directly associated with MISSION SAN GABRIEL ARCÁNGEL although many descendant groups still visit or attend services every week.. The following year on October 15th 1910 Mexican national revolutionary Emiliano Zapata led his forces against American troops occupyingMexicali during Mexican Revolution Week celebrations that began on September 26th.; eventually over 100 people were killed including Zapata himself and weeks later on October 29th General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived atMISSION SAN GABRIEL ARCÁNGEL with orders to crush any opposition;; less than 24 hours later nine members of López' staff including priest Fray José Gomez died when their car crashed into a tree near campus; three other employees survived but suffered serious injuries.) A plaque dedicated to Lopez erected atMISSION SAN GABRIELDARCÁNGELin 1969 reads: “Here Lies Emiliano Zapata Killed October 29RD 1910 By Order Of General Antonio López de Santa Anna” .) San Bernardino was founded in 1795 by Juan José Cámpora as a small mission in the Presidio of San Bernardino on what is now known as the east side of San Bernardino County. The first post office in the area was established in 1814. In 1836, the Santa Clara Mission merged with Rancho San Bernardino to form the current mission and town of San Bernardino. The town was initially named "Rancho Los Angeles" but it was changed to "San Bernardino" after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's visit there in 1838. After Mexican independence from Spain, California became part of Mexico and most of what is now California passed under Mexican sovereignty. However, some areas including Alisalto and parts of Riverside County were granted Anglo land grants by Mexico as part of Rancho Niguel (now Orange County). In 1851, Governor Carlos Manuel de Harbinger approved plans for a new county seat at San Bernardino and appropriated $5,000 for its construction. The site chosen for the new county seat was on land that would eventually become downtown San Bernardino today. On November 6, 1861, voters elected Drury J. Richardson as their first sheriff and John Sibley as their first district attorney. In 1870, Southern Pacific Railway began construction on an line from Stockton to Pasadena through southern Alisalto County and north into Riverside County; this growth led to increased competition for jobs between railroad companies and towns throughout California which led to more violence among settlers over land issues and other grievances such as payouts for military service beyond what had been agreed upon when lands were acquired. This competition also forced many farmers to abandon their farms in favor of corporateemployment within these companies or along the railway lines where wages were much higher than those available outside these industries however prices did not continue to increase at a rate that supported continued agriculture despite high-population densities near major railroads during this time period because transportation costs became prohibitively expensive following completion of Interstate 10 across most all portions of this state during the late 1960s–early 1970s when local support services emerged which remain extant todayalbeit with scaled back funding due to various economic factors). The town of San Bernardino was founded in 1795 by one of the earliest permanent European settlers in what is now California. The area that would become San Bernardino County was first explored by the Spanish in 1769, and it wasn't until 1821 that they began to explore and claim the land around present-day San Bernardino. In 1824, parts of present-day Riverside were annexed to Santa Ana County while other portions were added to San Bernardino County. On July 14, 1870, a group of towns people from nearbyfigure out a way to join together and form what would become known as the City of San Bernardino. The city's incorporation happened on October 1, 1870. At its peak, San Bernardino had a population of over 120 people and was home to two banks, four churches, four schools, three newspapers (the "San Bancroft Gazette" and "Los Angeles Herald", both published by George Hearst), two parks (one near where I-10 currently meets Interstate 15), six breweries (five local and one imports), fifty seven stores (thirty eight being convenience stores), twelve residential buildings with thirty five residents each and four hotel rooms providing service to travelers visiting the region for business or pleasure.
