But when white people started coming to this new country, they didn't like being called "Mary." So they changed their name to "San Bernardino" after St. Bernard (the patron saint of Switzerland). This name stuck around for many years because so few people knew about it other than those living near where it had been established. In 1912, when Riverside County was created, San Bernardino became one of its newest divisions. At first there were only a few hundred people living here; but quickly enough, businesses began opening up and jobs began to be available for locals as well as newcomers! By 1970, there were more than 10,000 residents in San Bernardino County! Today, many things have changed since 1912: our county has grown by more than 20%, we've added more than 100 miles of roadway - including both Interstate 15 and State Route 67 - and our economy has diversified greatly through job growth in several industries - such as manufacturing and healthcare services - along with residential development throughout our city center!
