In 1872, when the railroad was built through Mono Lake and began carrying passengers and cargo between Los Angeles and Santa Monica, businesses along its route began to grow rapidly. By 1898, there were over 100 businesses in downtown Los Angeles connected by streetcars and trains to these small villages west of town. In addition to its growing population, San Bernardino also saw developing industry as other towns across southern California attracted workers for new mines or mills located near their townships. One such development was Riverside who constructed a large mill on Mill Creek in 1892 which would become one of the largest mills in Southern California. This mill would eventually be bought out by Sears Roebuck & Co., but it remains a popular tourist attraction today due to its unique architecture and beautiful view from atop the dam! During World War II many jobs were created in munitions plants throughout Southern California due to wartime shortages within America itself and abroad. One such plant was at Redlands which produced ammunition for American forces fighting in Europe and Asia. After the war ended, many factory jobs left Redlands behind as production shifted towards more natural resources like aluminum cans or agricultural products like fruits and vegetables!
