However, pistols didn’t really take off until the 19th century when Europeans started invading North America and bringing their firearms with them. As handguns became more popular in North America, certain manufacturers began producing higher-quality firearms than others. For example, Smith & Wesson began making Model 6 rifles in 1903 while Colt continued creating revolvers under the name “Plymouth Colt” until 1896. In the early 1800s, San Bernardino was a small farming community located in what is now Riverside County. The name "San Bernardino" means "place of many fruit trees." In 1823, the area became part of Rancho San Bernardino Mexican land grant to José Castro and his brother-in-law Manuel Nieto. This grant spanned from present day Riverside County east to Upland and included parts of today's Orange County. On December 14, 1825, Mission San Jose de la Purísima Concepción (also known as Mission San Gabriel) was founded on top of an old mission hill by Father Francisco Xavier Menéndez y Montoya. In 1851, the Mexican government granted Rancho Niguel to José Antonio Carrillo and his wife María Isabel Carrillo. They divided the grant into two parts: one including most of today's Riverside County; and the other including most of today's Orange County. The Menéndez y Montoya missions remained operational until 1795 when they were abandoned due to plague that swept through Mexico City at that time. The first English visitor to Southern California was Juan Crespí who traveled up the coast in 1769 during exploration for new lands north of Mexico City. Crespí named several local hills after Frenchmen he met along his journey - La Venta Hill near La Jolla, Point Lobos off Newport Beach, and Cerrito del Rey just south of Irvine – but it seems nothing came from these naming schemes. Spanish missionaries had christened many places in San Diego Bay with Latin surnames beginning with those associated with their home country such as López or Zúñiga – so why not Angeles? There must have been some confusion because no real maps existed documenting this area at that time…or maybe someone simply forgot! The city of San Bernardino was founded in 1887 by two brothers, George and Alonzo San Bernardino. The brothers were natives of Southern California, and they began to build a small town on the edge of what is now Riverside County. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other vegetables. In 1902, the city annexed part of eastern Riverside County. In 1915, when World War I ended, San Bernardino became an emergency military camp because it was one of the few places in California where troops could be stationed until their home states could be taken care of. The military operated outposts here for the next several years; however, in 1919 San Bernardino joined the larger City of Los Angeles as a separate municipality. San Bernardino experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its position as a major supplier of munitions to Japan. In 1945, after Japan's surrender and the end of World War II,San Bernardino became an official U.S. Acceptance Zone city. It continued to grow rapidly through the post-war years; by 1970 it had reached its present size with a population over 100,000 people
