San Bernardino is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 20,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Inyo County and part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has been home to various settlements and missions over its history. American forces burned down much of the mission during World War II; however, most of its remaining structures remain and are operated as part of UCLA's Department of History and Heritage. In 1857, José Joaquin Murillo y Vargas granted Rancho San Benito al Rancho del Cuchumatán which became part of what is now Inyo County on February 14 th . On October 16th 1860 a grant from Governor Manuel Nieto increased acreage to 1 million acres (400 km²). A year later Gov Don Felipe brown sold 640 square miles (1,600 km²) including present day San Bernardino County for $30 million to Antonio López de Santa Anna who named it Paso Robles adjacent to his land grant from Governor Manuel Nieto. As California grew increasingly Democratic during the late 19th century, attitudes about Mexicans changed and they began to be seen as aliens who were taking advantage of American workers and resources. This culminated with the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) which ended with Mexico's formal cession of California to America via Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The war had significant consequences for San Bernardino county because many Mexican immigrants living there came seeking revenge against their former compatriots who had been displaced by American forces. The following year saw another large influx of settlers when gold was discovered in nearby Rushville; however, it would be another decade before any serious development occurred inSan Bernadino County due primarily to environmental reasons such as severe drought that struck every year during that time period. Finally, on July 14, 1870 – just over two decades after its founding – San Bernardino became one of 25 counties within newly created Riverside County when all but four other parts of Orange County (the largest county at that time) were detached from Los Angeles County for political reasons related to growing city populations and concerns about future annexation by Los Angeles proper (see also: los angeles annexation crisis). Today, San Bernardino is home To more than 100 businesses located throughout its diverse downtown area including several strip malls complete with restaurants and hotels while its rural surroundings offer agriculture production including hay crops and citrus fruit trees
