Today, however, it remains an agricultural powerhouse with some OFA (On-Farm Agriculture) businesses thriving within its boundaries including Archer Daniels Midland Company, Intel Corporation Headquarters Campus complex on Union City Boulevard (home to world’s largest light bulb factory), Gaviota Bay Estates Golf Course which opened in 1984 and is now home to more than 30 restaurants including three Burger Kings locations – all operated by In-N-Out Burger Inc.; Chowhound which operates multiple online food delivery services across Southern California; Verizon Wireless whose headquarters are located just east of town along Interstate 10; as well as numerous other businesses catering to both local farmers and tourists alike.

The town started off as an agricultural community with a few wooden buildings erected around an irrigation canal. In 1881, parts of citrus groves were donated to establish Riverside City Park and about this time businesses started popping up such as Hardware Store #1 (1881), Mercantile Exchange (1889), First National Bank (1892) and Post Office #2 (1896). In 1906–07 when Southern Californian farmers experienced Dust Bowl conditions that caused widespread crop failures due to lack of rainfall and temperature extremes, they sought relief from high costs associated with government food stamps through organized group buying trips across state lines. This event became known as "The Day Without Bread". wagonsloads of empty boxes labeled "Bread Pudding" arrived at various train stations throughout Southern California that week; prices for flour and other necessaries had quadrupled since 1905. Local people contributed their excess flour while others sold candy bars or breads from wagons imported from Illinois or Missouri
In 1892, San Bernardino County was formed from parts of Riverside and Orange counties. It became an unincorporated community in 1908. In 1912, the first post office opened in San Bernardino. The name of the town was changed to San Bernardino in 1916 when it became a county seat.
