The Thomas Fire began on a morning when a gust of wind tossed sparks off an adjacent building and into a transformer near Sixth and Sepulveda Streets. By lunchtime that day, the fire had grown to more than 100 acres and was making rapid progress northwestward toward downtownSan Bernardino.Within hours firefighters had arrived on the scene but it was too late; by evening there were reports of up to 30 buildings consumed and up to 20 people dead or missing after being trapped inside burning homes . TheThomasFire cost California $183,000 in lost property and lives- almost three times as much as any other California fire in 1896
