There have been a variety of ammo types and calibers used in the San Bernardino area for over 150 years. Bullets that have been found include Spanish bullets, case shot, wildcat rounds, and black powder ammunition. The first American armory was established in 1858 in what is now downtown San Bernardino. Ammunition usage varied based on the needs of the military at the time or later changed to match rifles with metallic sights brought into use by General Kearny during his California campaigns. The first commercial ammunition store opened up in San Bernardino in 1892 and continued to grow until it closed its doors in 1922 due to the Great Depression. The only other business open at that time was a gunsmith which handled rifle barrel production. Ammunition sales decreased during World War I as munitions were diverted towards war effort on Europe while America's factories produced arms for global conflict. Post-war production shifted towards sporting goods as technology improved and demand increased for handguns, shotguns, and hunting rifles from consumers all over the world. In 1949, Winchester began producing their own ammunition under license from Remington Arms Company. This led to an increase in manufacturing operations within San Bernardino County as well as new retail outlets throughout Southern California selling Winchesters Ammo products including Gunsite Outfitters located near City College of San Bernardino and various sporting goods stores that carried Winchester Ammunition products such as birdshot, selfloading pistols (including revolvers), game loads (alligator clips),and shotgun shells made especially for target shooting or duck hunting purposes among others

In 1827, Governor Manuel Micheltorena created a new county out of parts of Alta California, and San Bernardino County was one of the first counties included. The name "San Bernardino" comes from a mission that was built there in 1809 by Franciscan missionaries.
