San Anselmo is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 26,545 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cwc). The first European to sight the Peninsula were two Spanish ships, Nuestra Señora de las Concepciones and Nuestra Senorita de los Angeles on December 18, 1769. Mission San Anselmo was founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1795 on land granted by Governor Alvarado. The town of Benicia was founded nearby in 1846 as part of an effort to build an interurban line from Redwood City to San Jose. In 1870–71 American engineer Alfred Rogers built a newGS&H railroad through Tiburon Peninsula connecting Redwood City with Martinez and Benicia Junction. The eastern extremity of the peninsula became known as "Rogers' Foothills" because that is where he built his locomotive factory before crossing back into California near Point Reyes National Lakeshore. Electric streetcar service began operations in 1906 from downtown San Anselmo to Tiburon Landing; this service was discontinued in 1971 but remains as a historical footnote because it used trolleycar tracks running east-west across center county while private buses ran north-south along Tiburon Boulevard continuing past modern day SR 237 which bisects downtown San Anselmano today. In 1954 voters adopted Measure T providing for cityhood including incorporation of portions of neighboring Santa Clara County making it one of only six cities statewide thereby entitling it to its own charter (the others are Berkeley, Los Angeles, Oakland/Alameda County, Palo Alto/El Camino Real and Sacramento). A year later citizens voted against annexation by Santa Clara Countyadopting Measure R which would have put all but 20% of the annexed territory within city limits instead forming what is now Silicon Valley . In 1966 Measure M annexing much unincorporated area southof Interstate 280 took place resulting in about 50% integration into city government although some suburbs retain their own police & fire services

The first Europeans to visit San Anselmo were the Portuguese in 1527. The town was founded by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Spaniard, in 1781 as part of a land grant to José de Arce. The name San Anselmo is Spanish for "Sanctuario" and it derived from the mission of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria located on what is now Highland Avenue. In 1821, Alvarado purchased the Mission property from José de Arce and turned it into a state park. In 1846, California Gold Rush miners discovered gold near San Anselmo and began arrivein droves. The population of San Anselmo grew rapidly and by 1850 there were over 1,500 residents.During World War II, San Anselmano became home to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and other military installations. In 1951, the city annexed portions of unincorporated County Palos Verdes which made it one of the most populous cities in Los Angeles County. After years of growth and development, Racial Discrimination laws drove many African Americans out of town during the 1960s; however, they have since re-cooperated with the city through various programs including joint policing efforts In recent years downtown has seen an increasing focus on art galleries, restaurants/bars and nightlife venues as well as new housing developments adjacent to UCSB's campus for students living off-campus or working at UC Berkeley or UCLA campuses
