Mission San Rafael del Norte was founded in 1781 by Father José de Altamira and Brother Fernando de Noriega. In 1873, San Anselmo became part of the new county of Contra Costa and was home to a large number of Mexican Americans who worked in agriculture and other businesses. In 1906, San Anselmo joined the city of Berkeley as one of its seven charter members.
