San Anselmo is a small town in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the eastern coast of San Francisco Bay and has been a seaside community since its incorporation as a town in 1875. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Anselmo were members of the Spanish Mission Santa Cruz de la Frontera on December 11, 1769. A group of seven men and one woman set out from Monterey with only scraps of food and directions to follow inland for ten days until they arrived at present-day Sausalito Point on February 1, 1770. They named their new settlement after Saint Anselmo, a Catholic missionary preacher who had died in Mexico City two years earlier. In 1875, both Menlo Park and Sausalito became part of the newly formed city of San Francisco; but San Anselmo continued to be an unincorporated township within San Mateo County. In 1916 it became part of the City of Redwood City when that city was created from portions of three other counties: Alameda (the predecessor to Oakland), Contra Costa (the predecessor to Berkeley), and Marin (the predecessor to Sacramento). A post office operated at Sankt assistance from 1865 until 1906; during that time letters were mailed by horseback or carriage over the course of several miles down country roads leading into Sausalito Harbor. In 1850, San Anselmo began to be developed as a small agricultural community. By 1870, it had a population of 100 people and had its own schoolhouse and Methodist church. In 1888, San Anselmo became an incorporated town with a population of 300 people. In 1912, the city of San Francisco was founded on the eastern edge of San Anselmo and it quickly outgrew San Anselma's services. Over time, however, the two towns merged into one municipality.
